Katherine Duncan Aimone
2009, Lark Books, a division of Sterling Publishing
Every one has a story to tell.
Will you tell yours by pasting your photos and mementoes on cutsie scrapbooking papers, all matchy-matchy and tied up with a bow…..or will you take your life story or vignettes (I like to call them ‘slices of life’) and make them into art?
This 128-page volume is about artistically publishing your life story/stories into tactile treasures that can be enjoyed and admired, as well as passed on with pleasure.
Turning to page 18, to the section entitled “Thinking Outside the Box”, may open you up to the possibilities. I love the quote these made by artist Luann Udell:
“I find it helpful to ‘center’ the project on something in my heart. Trying to figure out what other people think is cool or wonderful sends me into a tizzy! But making something that pleases ME almost always turns out well.”
It’s true!
The writer of the book, Ms. Aimone, advises:
- Keep a good stockpile of inspiring supplies. (I call this a rainy day box…stuff you pick up along the way not because you know just what you will ever do with it, but because it moves you and inspires you. One day, you’ll know what to do with it! I share some of my finds here on this site, www.bsueboutiques.com)
- Bend the rules. Have fun! Do you REALLY have to complete the project today? This week? This month?
- Always choose materials that make your heart sing. (Amen! Why spend time with anything less?)
- Be willing to change your mind. Start with a concept but if it’s not working, set is aside and try something else.
- Inspiration is EVERYWHERE. (Oooooh I love it when I’m validated! I’ve always said that!)
As are most books of this nature, you will find numerous projects that will suggest ways to get you started. Some of the featured artists are Sarah Fishburn, who has been featured in Mary Englebreit publications; Susan Mc Bride, who has illustrated three crafts books for children, all published by Lark Books; Stephanie McAtee who has a passion for collage, photography and journaling (www.capturedelements.com) and Linda and Opie O’Brien, teaching artists and some of my personal favorites. I reviewed their book, METAL CRAFT DISCOVERY WORKSHOP, earlier on this website.
Even if you are strictly a jewelry artist and have little intention of working on paper, this book is a worthy read and and even better addition to your artist’s bookshelf. It’s asking price of 17.95 is reasonable. In my estimation just about anything published in this vein by Lark Books, is something worth reading. I hope you’ll have time to check it out soon!
