Susan Rouleau/Mountain Shadow Studio
Romantic Porcelain and Ceramic with Vintage Flair

What a pleasure it is to get to know Susan Rouleau again after so many years! I'm so happy to be able to share her talent with you here at B'sue Boutiques.

Susan and I met ten years ago at the 2001 VFCJ Jewelry Convention in Providence, Rhode Island. I remember well the long conversation that she and I had about brass stampings at vendor's night. Susan admired the pieces I had made from old cold painted enamel flowers----the same flowers we now carry here at this website, and I've been teaching you to colorize for yourself! She scooped up numerous vintage goodies from our table, and she tells me she still is working with the remnants of that purchase.

Susan is a ceramic and porcelain artist as well as an avid quilter and beader. She has always loved making jewelry and has been very much inspired by the jewelry of the mid 20th century designer, Miriam Haskell. That interest is something that she and I truly have in common. Using her interest in vintage jewelry and in particular, Haskell vintage designs, Susan decided to create soft and whimsical porcelain pieces that could be softly beaded or enhanced by beads...or combined with repurposed vintage components.

China painting classes taught her about overglazes; she had studied ceramics in college. She purchased some porcelain clay, fired up the kiln and the rest is history.

Susan is really 'into' the science of firing her clay. She has been very free with me in describing and telling me about the processes she uses and why they intrigue her. She likes the feel and finish of porcelain clay fired to a cone 10. Further lower fire firing with an overglaze produces the desired results.

I am so thrilled to have reconnected with this artist as she and I will be working closely to develop a soft-colored line of goods that will go so nicely with the things we sell at B'sue Boutiques.
