Steampunk Sapphire Necklace By Margo Horowitz
Tutorial
This is a necklace that brings the style of vintage and steampunk together for a vintage-inspired steampunk yet, lovely and feminine looking piece to treasure.
MATERIALS:
1 Large Porthole Bezel (bezel30)
1 Gear Style Mount (brox09252)
1 Whirligig (brox09209)
1 Steampunk Grid Sprocket (brox09082)
1 Brass Sprocket Gear
1 9mm sapphire glass cabochon
1 4mm Swarovski crystal sapphire rhinestone
6 Vintage 6mm Swarovski round crystals
4 Barrel Filigree Beads (brox06374)
20 Dark Bronze Japanese Seed Beads size 11
20 Bronze Japanese Seed Beads size 11
10 Antiqued Brass 22 gauge Eye Pins (1 1/2")
14mm Antiqued Brass Chain
18 Antiqued Brass 22 gauge Open Jump Rings (4 -6mm)
1 Antiqued Brass 22 gauge 6-8mm Jump Ring
1 12mm Antiqued Brass Lobster Claw (clasp1)
1 Brass Eyelet Rivet (eyelet-rivet)
E6000 Glue (E6000)
Please note that the brass twig pictured above was originally planned for this necklace however I decided not to use it.
TOOLS:
Round Nose Pliers
Chain Nose Pliers
Flush Cutter
Jump Ring Tool
Toothpick
DIRECTIONS:
Use the tip of the toothpick to put some E6000 glue on it (in a well-ventilated area) and apply it sparingly (less is better) to the bottom of the gear style mount.
Now center the gear style mount onto the large porthole bezel carefully with a little pressure. Put this aside.
Repeat steps #1 and #2 with the sapphire cabochon onto the center of the whirligig. Put this aside too.
Once again repeat steps #1 and #2 with the steampunk grid sprocket and center it onto the brass sprocket gear carefully with a little pressure. Set this aside too.
The 3 glued pieces must be allowed to dry and cure for 24 hours.
Take an eye pin and place a bronze Japanese seed bead onto it followed by a dark bronze seed bead, a vintage 6mm sapphire crystal, another dark bronze seed bead, and a bronze seed bead. Make a loop using your round nose plier at the end of the pin for connecting. Repeat this for each of the other 5 crystals. Set the crystals aside.
Repeat step #5 with each of the 4 filigree barrel beads.
Take a 4mm jump ring and open it with your chain nose plier and jump ring tool. Connect a sapphire crystal to a filigree barrel bead and close the jump ring.
Take another 4mm jump ring and open it and connect the barrel filigree bead from the last step and connect it with a crystal. Continue connecting the beads by alternating the crystal bead with the barrel bead until you have a chain of 5 beads starting with a crystal bead and ending with a crystal bead.
Repeat step #9 with the other 5 beads to create an exact duplicate 5 bead chain.
Take your 14mm brass piece of chain and cut it into two 7mm pieces with your flush cutter.
Attach each 7mm brass piece of chain, using another 4mm jump ring, to each crystal and filigree bead chain so that you have 2 duplicate bead chains once again.
Take the 6mm jump ring and attach it to one of the ends of a chain you have made--be sure to attach it to the chain side end and not the bead side end--this is part of your closure.
Take a 4mm jump ring and open it up to place the 12mm lobster clasp on it and then attach it to the end of the 2nd chain you made--again, be sure to attach it to the chain side end and not the bead side. This is the other part of your closure. Set your 2 chains aside until tomorrow to use with your first 3 components that have been glued and are waiting to dry.
24 hours later, when your 3 sets of gears are dry, take some more glue on a toothpick and attach the whirligig component to the top of the gear style mount component and the 4mm sapphire crystal rhinestone on the top of the steampunk grid sprocket component and allow them 24 hours to dry.
24 hours later you are ready to complete your necklace by attaching the whirligig component to the steampunk grid sprocket component with two 4mm jump rings for extra hold.
Attach your bead chains to your steampunk pendant by using a 4mm jump ring to connect the crystal side of the chain to your pendant. Do the same for the second chain you have made.
Your lovely vintage-inspired steampunk necklace is now complete.
The finished length of this necklace is 17"(43cm) long with a 2 1/2"(6.5cm) pendant drop.
About this Jewelry Artisan:
Margo Horowitz has enjoyed many different crafts over the years. However, for the past 7 years, she has found that designing and creating jewelry is her greatest passion. Her designs are quite eclectic from contemporary, to classic, to vintage, to funky, and to a fusion of styles. Recently she has been challenging herself to create altered art and steampunk pieces. She is enjoying hand finishing pieces with liver of sulfur, inks, and paints. Margo is the leader of a jewelry design and jewelry supply studio guild for over 2 years on the Artfire.com handmade selling site. Margo often says that she is like a child who still has so much more to learn and so much more to create.
